About The Fiji Islands Situated between Polynesia and Melanesia in the South Pacific, there are around 300 Fiji islands that span an area of 1.3 million sq km but only a small percentage of this is dry land. Fiji Islands History According to the legends, after travelling across the Pacific Ocean the first Fijians landed at Vuda point. Even though this is just legend, historians all agree that the first settlers came about 3,500 years ago from Melanesia. Europeans did not discover the islands until much later around 1643 by a Dutch navigator named Abel Tasman. Fiji Islands Weather Fiji enjoys a tropical climate year-round. You can expect warm temperatures: 75 to 90 degrees with humidity during the day, and 70 to 78 at night.
